Last week GoPro launched its Enduro battery for sale, enhancing the runtimes of the HERO10 and HERO9 cameras.
The Enduro is a solution for people who have been finding their HERO10 running out of juice quickly, particularly at high frame rates. Surprisingly the Enduro battery has the same Mac rating as the standard battery, but its new chemistry works better in cold weather, and it can deal with a more sustained power draw even as it uses up capacity.
The figures that GoPro are touting are as follows for a battery temperature of 14°F / -10°C:-
- 56 minutes of 5.3K60 video
- 50 minutes of 4K120 video
- 76 minutes of 4K60 video
- 115 minutes of 1080p30 video
At battery temperatures of 77°F / 25°C, the Enduro battery enables, on average:
- 60 minutes of 5.3K60 video (a 28% improvement over the standard battery)
- 51 minutes of 4K120 video (a 40% improvement over the standard battery)
- 71 minutes of 4K60 video (a 13% improvement over the standard battery)
- 120 minutes of 1080p30 video
I've been testing the Enduro ourselves and the figures GoPro provides would appear to be pretty spot on. For example I tested both the standard battery and the Enduro inside a fridge at 4K/120fps. While the camera still shut down due to overheating (this is *not* a problem with the camera, incidentally, it's just a result of such high frame rates in such a small camera), with the standard battery I got a total recording time of around 21 minutes. With the Enduro the total amount of footage I recorded was 53 minutes. For this test I had to let the camera cool down before carrying on recording, but the total amount of footage I could record on one charge of the Enduro at 120fps was substantially increased.
My tests of 5K video at 60fps have also fallen pretty much in line with GoPros official figures, and the battery would appear to hold its charge well even if it isn't being used, for example inside a pocket in freezing temperatures. So my recommendation for any owner of a HERO10, or a HERO9 for that matter is to get hold of an Enduro battery or two. It's a vast improvement over the stock battery.
