Sony aims new Crystal LED VERONA squarely at virtual production

Sony has announced a new addition to its Crystal LED display lineup with the introduction of two new VERONA displays.

The new Sony VERONA displays have been specially developed for virtual production applications, such as background LEDs for In-Camera VFX (ICVFX) for drama, cinema, commercial filming, music video and other types of creative productions.

They come equipped with two game-changing features: Deep Black and Anti-Reflection Surface Technology. Deep Black technology enhances image expression with exceptionally dark blacks, while Anti-Reflection Surface Technology minimizes reflections, reducing contrast loss caused by adjacent LED displays and studio lighting. The result is what the company claims to be a seamless blend of virtual and real-world elements, all of which helps to reduce the time and cost needed for post production adjustments.

VERONA doesn't stop there either; it reaches a brightness of 1500 cd/m² and covers a wide color gamut of over 97% of DCI-P3, ensuring realistic shooting locations come to life. The displays also feature high-performance LED driver ICs, enabling refresh rates of up to 7,680Hz, effectively eliminating scanline artifacts on cameras.

The 1:1 cabinet design simplifies assembly, offering easy grip handles, locating pins for precise alignment, and a tool-free lever-type locking mechanism. VERONA accommodates curved, hanging, and stacking configurations, with reinforced frames capable of supporting screens up to 7 meters high. The display surface and edges are safeguarded by protective mechanisms during installation.

VERONA is available in two models, ZRD-VP15EB/23EB and ZRD-VP15EM/23EM, with pixel pitches of P1.56mm and P2.31mm respectively. The displays are compatible with widely-used controllers in the industry, with the ZRD-VP15EB/23EB working seamlessly with Brompton Technology's Tessera SX40 and the ZRD-VP15EM/23EM integrating with Megapixel's HELIOS Processing Platform. And critically the new models exhibit an impressive 27% reduction in power consumption when compared to the previous ZRD-B15A model.

VERONA made its debut at IBC and is scheduled to be available in Spring 2024. More info at pro.sony/verona.
